The Liturgy of Life

Matt Oberhelman

September 3rd, 2023

Romans 12:1

Worship matters - it is what we are made for and it is what makes us who we are. Liturgy is a formative, love-shaping ritual - or simply put: the means by which we shape and form our hearts and minds, and consequently our behavior. Who we are right now is the product of liturgies, whether they are holy and correct or not, because we are creatures of habit; and liturgy habituates us. We must be careful to not succumb to the competing liturgies the world offers and instead day by day submit ourselves to ones that are holy and redirect ourselves back to the one who created us and redeemed us. Worship matters, but ultimately correct worship, in spirit and in truth, matters the most because we all worship something at any given time. The question becomes, “who, or what, are we worshipping”, because what we worship shapes who we are.

Abandon False Hope

1 Peter 1:3-5

1 Peter 1:23-25

Our hope in Christ is not just a concept, some undefined thing. Our inheritance will not perish or fade away. Everything in the world will eventually change states, and worldly things always go from better to worse. Our inheritance will never get worse, and there is nothing better.

How Do We Know We Have Eternal Life?
Colton White
January 3rd, 2021

1 John 2:1-17
How do you know that you have eternal life? Too many times our answer to this question is based on false realities. From claiming our parents faith, to church attendance and even looking to our morality for our assurance of faith. However, all of these are lies. 1 John makes clear that our hope in eternal salvation is based on one thing: The saving grace of Jesus Christ. A heart that is truly transformed by the grace of God does not indulge in the things of the world, but rather, flee’s from the world and pursues the things of God. So, while the blood of Christ is our assurance, the pursuits of our hearts are the evidence of that transformation.

Habakkuk 3
“It’s complicated.” Indeed, we are living in complicated times. However, all throughout the Bible we see that it is in the midst of the complicated that God tends to display His glory. It’s in the wilderness that He meets. In that place he refines us and makes us into something new. He uses the circumstances of our life to display His glory to others and He uses the complicated to grow our faith!

Psalm 77
Lament is a major theme in the Bible and particularly in the book of Psalms. To lament is to express deep sorrow, grief, or regret. The psalms of lament are beautiful poems or hymns expressing human struggles. And make no mistake, in this season of COVID-19 we are in a struggle. However, God has proved his faithfulness to us over and over again! This week we will first lament. It’s okay to share your sorrow, grief or regret with God, but it’s important to allow God to meet us in that place. In that place He will show us His faithfulness.
