  • Sermon Series Overview

The English title,”Psalm” comes from the Greek word “psalmos”, which translates to “song.” The book of Psalms, has supplied to believers some of their best-loved Bible passages. It is a collection of 150 poems that express a wide variety of emotions, including: love and adoration toward God, sorrow over sin, dependence on God in desperate circumstances, the battle of fear and trust, walking with God even when the way seems dark, thankfulness for God’s care, devotion to the word of God, and confidence in the eventual triumph of God’s purposes for the world.

Through “Songs of Hope”, we will aim to look at Psalms that give us hope in the midst of difficult circumstances.

This seven week series will give Renewal Church an opportunity to focus our attention on the glory of God and the hope of Christ. Each week we will look at a specific theme from a Psalm that illuminates the power and sovereignty of God as we seek God’s leading for what He wants from our faith-family

Psalm 1
The first psalm serves as the gateway into the entire book of Psalms, stressing that those who would worship God genuinely must embrace His Word. “Blessed” can be translated to mean, “happy”, and as we delight in the Word of God it will inevitably make us happy! Psalm 1 seeks to answer the question, “what does the happy person do?” The happy (blessed) person delights in God rather than delighting in the wickedness of this world.

Psalm 2
What do we do when our life feels out of control? One of the most terrifying feelings is looking around and seeing nothing but chaos. In Psalm 2 we see the world in chaos, but in the midst of that chaos, we see a king. A king that holds all the chaos in the palm of His hand, and despite how things look He does all that He pleases. Psalm 2 brings a promise, that out of that chaos will come a son. A son that will gather the nations, rule over them, and ultimately judge them. The same story is true in Acts 4 when the apostles recognize that Psalm 2 was happening right before their eyes. The nations were rallying against them, but they pleaded to God for the boldness to speak of the great works of Jesus. The same is true for us. The nations rage against God, but Jesus still sits on His throne as King!

Psalm 63
What does your heart truly long for? When you lay on your bed late at night, what do you find yourself thinking about? What stirs your affections more than anything else? In Psalm 63 we find David in the wilderness and what does he long for? He longs for the only one that is truly worthy of desiring — God Himself. How will you spend the days that God has gifted you? Will you spend it satisfied in the presence of God or will you waste it enjoying fruitless joy? As Paul says in Colossians, “set your mind on things that are above, where Christ is.”

Psalm 23
You may not realize it, but every day something or someone is attempting to shepherd you. From your phone to bosses to teachers to marketing companies — shepherds all around us, but the question is, are they good shepherds? In Psalm 23 we get a picture of our true shepherd. Where does he lead us? To green pastures and still waters. He leads us to peace, hope and satisfaction. He is the king that holds all power and authority, but he exercises it with kindness and gentleness. This good shepherd came from perfect heaven to broken earth and He put on flesh. This shepherd lays down his life for His sheep, and we have life to the fullest because of Him.

Psalm 22
When Jesus cried out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me”, what exactly did He mean by that? In Psalm 22 we see a story and an expression of deep anguish and pain. And more than that, we get a glimpse into a person who feels like God has distanced Himself from them. Many of us understand this and we can relate to the writer. We have all experienced times of deep pain and moments where it feels like God has left us. Jesus felt this as well. Psalm 22 lays out the story of Christ’s suffering and crucifixion. However, the story doesn’t end with pain and anguish. The story ends with Christ victorious over death, and Christ’s victory is our victory!

Psalm 118
Psalm 118 is the most quoted Psalm in the New Testament. It is known as one of the most important songs ever written. It is the last song that Jesus ever sang, and it’s the song that he sang with his disciples at the last supper. On the cross it seemed that death had won, but things are not always as they seem. Death cannot defeat our king, and when Jesus walked out of that tomb it was a declaration to everyone that a new covenant had been established.

Psalm 68, Matthew 18:20-22
From Genesis to Revelation God has one purpose — to establish His glory among every tribe, tongue and nation. Why is God gracious to us? Why does he bless us? Why does he make his face shine upon us? So that His way may be known on earth. The question is, what are we doing with the things God has blessed us with? How are we using our time, our money, our skills and affections to reach a world that does not know Jesus as savior? God’s mission is not optional, and it is not only for “missionaries” by trade. So what are the ways we can participate in God’s mission? God calls the church to go, to send, and to pray.
