Habakkuk 1:1-2:5
The prophet Habakkuk looked around as saw violence, conflict, evil, and injustice. In the face of pain and suffering, Habakkuk complained about God’s apparent indifference and inaction. God answers that judgement upon Judah would soon come in the form of the Babylonian exile. Habakkuk then complains about the evil Babylonians continuing to destroy nations without mercy. God’s second response to Habakkuk reveals that God Himself would one day solve “the problem of evil” with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus: “The righteous shall live by his faith…” (v. 2:4). Habakkuk points to the gospel. God’s purpose in your pain is to bring you near to Him. We can live with confidence no matter how chaotic, confusing, or painful life can be.

Habakkuk 2:6-20
The book of Habakkuk is a conversation between the prophet and God about why God allows bad things to happen. Reading the book is basically reading Habakkuk’s prayer journal. God acknowledges that His people face an Enemy that seeks to destroy them, but in the end God will have victory. Bad things happen, in part, because we live in enemy-occupied territory. Just like God promised to destroy the Babylonians, He will one day defeat the Serpent that was at work through the evil Babylonian Empire. Through the power of the Spirit, we can face the Enemy without flinching and walk in victory!
Thriving in the Desert

Habakkuk 3:1-19
Yes, God allows hard things to happen to us. But, part of God’s purpose in allowing the pain and suffering is to grow us to maturity. He’s making us men and women of God. We can thrive in the desert and “rejoice in the Lord” knowing that God’s character is good and His plans for us will enable us to enjoy more of His presence.
